ESPA Glossary

Scientific Terms:

Biodiversity – a high biodiversity corresponds to increased healthiness and functionality within an ecosystem.

Cortisol – a hormone released by the body as a response to stress.

Ecosystem – a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

Lymph – key points around the face, neck and décolleté. The lyphatic system is the network of vessels through which lymph drains from the tissues into the blood.

Microbiome – the ecosystem of microorganisms that live on, and in harmony, with particular areas of our body. It is as unique to us as a fingerprint, and is determined by genetics, age, hormones, stress, diet and environmental factors.

Microbiota – another word for microorganisms, also known as skin flora.

Microorganisms – also known as skin flora and microbiota. Microorganisms are a naturally occurring community that include bacteria, mould, yeasts etc that live and work together in and on your skin.

pH– The pH level of the skin refers to how acidic or alkaline it is.  Typically for skin, the optimum pH is between 4.5 and 5.5. The skin has a thin, protective layer on its surface which is known as the acid mantle.

Prebiotic – a nutrient and source of nutrition that supports and nurtures live organisms already on the skin or in the gut.

Probiome –  a scientific phrase meaning to rebuild and restructure the ecosystem of our skin.

Probiome complex – ESPA’s unique combination of ingredients; prebiotic blend, peony extract and microalgae. This exclusive complex uses advanced microbiome technology for stronger skin that shows reduced signs of stress and has a much stronger resistance to future damage.

Probiotic – is either a live strain of one or more organisms, or an extract taken from a sterile microorganism. E.g the ‘live’ components in yoghurt drinks.

Skin microbiome –  a microscopic ecosystem that exists in and on the skin, made of microorganisms. It is crucial to maintaining skin health. Different ecosystems live on the surface of your skin due to the environmental factors surrounding them. Conditions such as hear, moisture, skin pH all affect it, and it is the skin’s first line of defence in protecting against these factors.

Ingredients:

Active Microalgae – creates a protective layer on the skin’s surface, almost like a ‘second skin’, while providing deep moisturisation.

Bio-retinol – a plant source that gives retinol-like activity without the associated irritation to help improve skin texture and tones. In Tri-Active Advanced ProBiome eye cream.

Chlorella Vulgaris – a type of algae that grows in fresh water and is rich in antioxidant benefits, also used in health supplements.

Chinese Butterfly Bush – an antioxidant-rich plant that supports cellular detoxification, helps protect the skin against the damaging effects of infrared rays and blue light from technology and slows the ageing process of skin.  In Tri-Active Advanced ProBiome serum.

Laminaria Digitata – also known as Kelp or Oarweed, grows in underwater forests. Boosts collagen synthesis to reduce signs of ageing.

Skin repair complex – a probiotic blend to support the skins ability to protect and repair, to counteract premature skin ageing.
