How often should you Exfoliate?

A question our therapists hear frequently is how often should you exfoliate and with what?

Our skin works hard to renew cells every day in order to protect itself from the outside world –therefore keeping skin on both the face and body fresh and radiant isn’t always easy.

Although most dead skin cells are able to slough off by themselves, others need a little help to keep pores from clogging or dry patches from forming.

How often?

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to exfoliation unfortunately as, for each of us, our skin behaves differently. Some may be able to exfoliate every day without issue, whereas others need far less to avoid irritation or damage.

In general though, once to twice a week for normal and combination skin, and once a week for sensitive skin should be sufficient to keep your complexion looking lovely and healthy all year round.

How do you want to exfoliate?

You can exfoliate in a number of ways, this could be through a physical exfoliator such as a sugar, salt, bead, kernel, brush or muslin cloth, which requires your effort to buff or sweep away. Or you can use a chemical exfoliator to dissolve cells with an acid or enzyme.

For the Face

When exfoliating your face you want to be as kind but as effective as possible. For normal and combination skin, use our Refining Skin Polish containing Rose Damascena and Shea Butter by lightly massaging Spherical Diatomaceous Earth in small circular movements into damp skin – revealing a smooth and revitalised complexion.

For sensitive skin types though, this may be too harsh on its own, therefore add to a small quantity of the Nourishing Cleansing Balm or Hydrating Cleansing Milk to exfoliate more gently.

If you want to exfoliate every day however, opt for the Optimal Skin ProCleanser – which is a cleanser, exfoliator and mask all-in-one. Using both dead cell dissolving Pumpkin Enzyme and Jojoba Spheres, skin is left healthy, nourished and glowing.

An alternative way to achieve the same result but avoid all that scrubbing is to use a mask. Pacman for the skin, dissolving dull, dead cells, the Pumpkin Enzyme in our Skin Radiance Mask eats away at dead cells to revive tired complexions and leave you looking and feeling renewed.

For the Body

When exfoliating the body, the same rules apply in terms of frequency. Once to twice a week is more than enough and can be mixed up with a combination of dry body brushing with our Salt Scrub or shower gel like the Invigorating Body Reviver.

It can be easy to forget in the colder months, but remember to exfoliate your body regularly to maintain a healthy, all over glow. And remember to use a good body butter after to deeply nourish and hydrate the skin.
